“MOVART is much more than a gallery. It is an artistic space where art is not just be viewed”

At MOVART we believe that art is effective when it generates community and instigates a cultural impact on its sphere of reach. That is why our goal is to build a dynamic and supportive art community that is inserted within and contributing to enriching Lisbon’s artistic fabric, but also reaching the rest of the world, always seeking to trace new relational cartographies to connect with projects that match our artistic vision. Considering carefully the spectator’s position, we are committed to offering experiences that are as rewarding as thought-provoking, hoping to inspire a deeper appreciation for contemporary art, enhancing diverse and decentered discourses. To achieve so, we complement our exhibitions with a curated programme of diverse events and initiatives.

Artist Talks and Discussion Panels

Regularly, we invite our featured artists and curators to give talks and/or discussion panels, where the artists offer a glimpse into their creative processes, inspirations, and personal journeys, and the curators introduce the theoretical discourses that serve to frame their practices, bringing in wider discussions that connect with the issues that inform and intersect with contemporary art. In these talks, the attendees are encouraged to ask questions, share thoughts, and engage directly with the artists and curators. With this, we strive to provide an openness to the public to make art accessible to different audiences.

Open Studios

In these sessions, we invite the public to visit an artist’s studio to gain a deeper knowledge of his creative methodologies. Confronted with the materiality of the processes, the intricacies of the media, and the train of thought of the artist through sketches, trials and errors, the audience may see a wider frame of everything that is eventually taking on form as an artwork, from the stage of ideation to that of practical execution. It also allows the artists to showcase their work more informally and intimately.

Workshops

We aim to host a wide range of art workshops in our gallery space, destined to different audiences, from kids to adults, who will get hands-on practice on varying media such as painting, screen-print, photography or ceramics. These will be lead by our artists or by other creative professionals and artisans we collaborate with. In the case of our artists, another typification unravels, for we give them freedom to conceive a specific concept for their workshop. As such, sometimes they will program a more didactic session to transfer their knowledge of the technique(s) they employ reflecting on the discourses that may unfold from them, while at others these workshop sessions might come out as a happening, where the artist plans an action as an experimental generative practice, to produce a collaborative artwork. The outcome will inform and enrich the artist’s own research and production, and we believe that this way we are able to create a feedback loop that suppresses the distinction between artist and public, and is in this way that a community is effectively effectuated.

Guided tours

You can book a guided tour with the gallery staff. On special occasions, these visits will be taken over by artists or associated curators.
