ESCOLA AO LADO

Escola ao lado (School next door) is one of Rita GT’s most recent works: a series made up of travelling lessons that both challenge and provoke learning schemes about the present vernacular. The aim is to deconstruct hierarchies in the school system and question the rigidity of current models of knowledge production and circulation.

After the first lesson – Learning with Golborne – which opened in London in March at the 50 Golborne Gallery, the project is travelling to the Angolan capital.

Só Bumba na Chicala will be lesson number two, to be presented at the Movart Gallery, and as has become usual in the artist’s career, the exhibition has the collaboration of other artists, in this case the informal school of the artist Nelo Teixeira.

The transformations of the Chicala 2 neighbourhood, where the artist Nelo Teixeira lives and works, the heritage of the Axiluanda people, the experience of the public and the private, will be some of the issues in focus – and in direct speech, as curator Ana Cristina Cachola emphasises. “In this school all voices are heard,” she emphasises.

This will be Rita GT’s second solo exhibition in Angola, following her first solo show in 2013 at the Instituto Camões in Luanda and her previous presence in various group exhibitions over the years that the artist lived in the country.
