As MOVART prepares for its transition to a new home at Rua Santo António a Estrela 76, we want to mark this special moment with the exhibition‘Beyond Borders’, which opens on 28 November at 6pm at Rua João Penha 14A.
‘Beyond Borders’ explores MOVART’s continuous movement across geographical, cultural and creative boundaries. As the last exhibition in our Jardim das Amoreiras space, this show pays homage to the gallery’s journey from its roots in Angola to its evolution in Lisbon, and anticipates its future in the new Estrela space. In ‘Beyond Borders’, we present a combination of past and new works by key artists who have been part of this journey, celebrating their ability to cross boundaries in their artistic practices. In this way, the exhibition becomes a transitional space, where MOVART’s past and present are in dialogue, leaving an indelible mark on this place that has been our home.
The artists reflect here not only the connection between Africa and Europe, but also an universal narrative about migration, identity and the crossing of internal and external barriers. ‘Beyond Borders’ invites visitors to look beneath the surface, question imposed boundaries and connect with art as a means of transformation and connection.
In 2025, MOVART will begin a new chapter in Estrela, at Rua Santo António a Estrela 76, a more versatile space where we will continue our commitment to promoting contemporary art, expanding its reach and relevance. ‘Below Borders’ marks the closing of a stage and, at the same time, the opening of a promising horizon for MOVART and our artists, where borders are challenged.
